The Hetrick family moved from Pennsylvania to Dodge county, Nebraska, during the Civil War. Children Esther, George, and Perry all died on 9 and 10 June 1882 of measles. Maria died 7 May 1886 of the same disease.
Adam's second wife was Mrs. Nancy Jane (Robinson) Wood, who survived him and is also buried in Kalispell. They were married 14 November 1887 in Logan, Harrison, Iowa. They had no children.
After their marriage, Adam and Nancy moved to Kalispell, where Adam owned a 320-acre fruit farm.
