Lydia Gertrude Smith Kilpatrick, 93, of Athens, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017, at Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late Bynum Charles "B.C." and Susie Crittenden Smith, and was preceded in death by her husband, William Walter Kilpatrick; one daughter, Marianna Canavan; one granddaughter, Meghan Canavan; three sisters, Pearl Owenby, Annie Leonard and Thelma Morrow; and three brothers, Spence Smith, Chester "Check" Smith and Raymond Smith. She was a former employee of Cook Paper Box Company and Ingleside Elementary School. She loved gardening, canning and working in her flowers and was a longtime member of East Athens Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Terry and Lori Kilpatrick of Abilene, Texas, and Rick Kilpatrick of Athens; four grandchildren, Shaun M. Kilpatrick, Kevin Canavan, Kristen Kilpatrick and Leland Kilpatrick; and two great-grandchildren, Jayden Canavan and Waylon Canavan.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Ziegler Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Pruett officiating. Burial will follow in Piney Grove Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
