Two die in tree-cutting, weekend traffic accidents
Weekend accidents left two older McMinn County men dead, authorities said.

An Athens man died Saturday night in a Knoxville hospital from injuries sustained in a tree-cutting accident Saturday afternoon.

W. Sherman Burris Jr., 72, was struck by a falling tree at a Niota area residence, according to the McMinn County Sheriff's Department.

Officer Lester Jones reported Burris and his son, Bill Burris, were cutting down a tree at the residence of Rod Wilson of 170 County Road 265, Niota, around 4 p.m. Saturday.

When the tree fell, it hit Sherman Burris, the report stated, and Wilson called 911 for assistance.

Jones stated in his report that when he arrived, he found Burris lying in his son's arms, breathing but unconscious. Emergency medical services arrived shortly thereafter, according to the report, and Burris was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

Burris was a life-long resident of McMinn County and was associated with Dooley Tractor Company for 40 years until his retirement. Obituary information is listed on Page 2 of today's edition of The Daily Post-Athenian.

In another accident, Chester H. Smith, 82, of Athens, was apparently killed when his 1996 Ford F-150 pickup crashed into a pond off County Road 750, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

THP officials said Sgt. Jerry Millsaps responded to the accident around 9 o'clock Friday night to find Smith outside his truck in a pond.

Troopers said Smith's vehicle went through a stop sign and then through a fence and into a pond near the intersection of County Roads 750 and 616.
