Marianna Hendon Canavan died Monday, March 26, 2012, in a Modesto, Calif., hospital after a brief illness with her son by her side.
She was born Nov. 18, 1946, in Athens and graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1968 with a bachelor of science degree in education - her lifelong passion. She married the love of her life, James J. Canavan, on July 4, 1968, in Arlington, Va. They were married for 35 years when Jim passed away in 2003. She was a loving mother, a wonderful wife, daughter and sister, an awesome teacher and a loyal friend to many.
She taught elementary school in Northern Virginia for 15 years and the Academic Gifted and Talented Program in the Sylvan School District in Modesto for 18 years.
She was preceded in death by her father, Louis Hendon; her husband, James J. Canavan; and a loving daughter, Meghan Canavan.
She enjoyed spending her free time reading, writing and watching sports. The great loves of her life were her family and friends. She was a dedicated teacher and was very proud to be afforded the opportunity to touch so many young lives.
Those left to cherish her memory are one son, Kevin Canavan; two grandchildren, Jaedyn and Waylon Canavan, both of Modesto; her mother, Gertrude Kilpatrick of Athens; two brothers, Terry Kilpatrick and his wife, Lori, of Abilene, Texas, and Rick Kilpatrick of Athens; one sister-in-law, Mary Canavan of Nashville; and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life was 3 p.m. Monday at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society.
