He was buried in March 1863 in Memphis National Cemetery, Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. He enlisted from the state of Illinois, 95th Regiment, Illinois Infantry. The Memphis Cemetery record has him as a Sergeant. Other records have him enlisting as a Corporal. In 1850, Jonas, wife Maria, and family are living in Bolton, Chittenden County, Vermont. Living with them is Jonas' mother Esther and his sister Tamerson (Tamsy). Jonas George STEVENS and Maria UNKNOWN were married. Maria UNKNOWN was born about 1820 in Vermont. Children: George STEVENS was born about 1844 in Vermont; Josephine STEVENS was born about 1846 in Vermont; and Joel STEVENS was born about 1848 in Vermont.
