Roger Stevens 1761-1841
This Stevens history begins with Roger Stevens who was born in 1761. A lengthy search with genealogical help failed to reveal his birthplace or his parents' names. The family seems to have been established in the state of Vermont. My father often told me his ancestors came from England. Records from the National Archives at Washington, D.C. gave much valuable information, especially for war records.

At the age of 17 years, in January 1778, Roger Stevens enlisted in the Revolutionary War. He was in the First New Hampshire Continental. Regiment under Captain Isaac Farwell. He served over five years. He first enlisted for three years and at the expiration of that time, reenlisted for the duration of the war. Suffering extremely cold exposures on active duty, he contracted rheumatism in both his legs which caused him to be a cripple the rest of his life.

On Jan 10th, 1792 at Granville, New York, he was married to Miss Esther Snow, born March 31st, 1779. Rev. Jurdon Dodge, a Baptist clergyman performed the ceremony. The couple moved to Vermont in May 1792. Eleven children were born to them.

1) Prudence Stevens, born July 17th, 1795, died Aug. 3, 1795

2) Henry Stevens, born April 22nd, 1798. He married Hannah Jones in 1823. He was a lumberman in the French Mills in the state of New York.

3) Milda Stevens was born Aug. 18, 1801. She worked in the home of Judge Truman Chittenden in Williston, Vermont. In September, 1821, she married Joseph Benway, who also worked for Judge Chittenden on his farm. Milda Stevens Benway died Feb 2, 1854.

4) Abigail Stevens, born Feb 8, 1804. Married Shellah Bentley in 1825.

5) Tamsey Stevens, born June 7, 1807. Died June 15, 1815.

6) Joel Stevens, born June 8, 1810.

7) Melissa Stevens, born Feb. 7, 1813.

8) Artimus C. Stevens, born Jan 10, 1816. Died Mar. 19, 1863.

9) Jonas G. Stevens, born Jan 6, 1819. Died in Civil War. Enlisted from State of Illinois.

10) Lydia Snow Stevens, born Nov. 16, 1820, died the same day.

11) Tamsey Stevens named after the Tamsey that died, born Oct 10, 1822.

In 1820 Roger and Esther Stevens lived in Chittenden County at Jericho, Vermont. It was from this County that Roger applied for Revolutionary "War Pension for disabled veterans.
