Fred was born in Schrotz, Lebenhkie, Posen and baptised as Johann Friedrick Marquardt. HE came to the US with his parents in 1872. He was a blacksmith, working for many years in the C. & A. Railroad shops. About the time of his first marriage, Fred decided to open his own business as a blacksmith but the enterprise only lasted a few months. His account book became the Minute Book of the German Baptist Church. After Amanda's death, he married the widowed Marie Jesse Steinkraus and they merged their families. His hobby was raising prize-wining chickens.
