Charles L. Marquardt was born in Schrotz, Lebenhkie, Posen. His name at baptism was August Karl Friedrick Marquardt. He left Germany in 1872 and settled in Bloomington, IL. Charles, like his father, was a blacksmith at the C. & A. R. R. Shops where he spent fourty-five years. For a time he was employed by the Bloomington-Normal Electric Railway Co. and operated the first electric streetcar in Bloomington. He married Augusta Allendorf March 22, 1887 in McLean Co. and they had Louisa "Lucy", Walter and Lawrence Marquardt. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.
