She was born in Gorista, Laconia, Greece, daughter of the late James and Helen Zaharis Manos and was the widow of George P. Nickles who died in 2007.
She came to the United States with her family in 1947 settling in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1957 she and George moved to Ithaca to become co-owners of Pop's Place, a favorite Cornell University eatery. More recently, she worked at the family business, Manos Diner, greeting the patrons of the diner with a friendly smile and building lasting friendships along the way.
She was a long time member of St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Church where she had served as the president of the Philoptochos Society and delighted many Ithacans with her signature pastry "kourambiedes."
A loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, godmother and friend, Matoula is survived by her daughter, Anna (John) Stavropoulos; her grandchildren, Georgina and Matoula Stavropoulos and Jory and Jamie Nickles and her treasured brother, Bill (Paulette) Manos. She is also survived by her beloved nieces and their families, Eleni Rojas (Cruz) and Liana, Stacy Nichols (Marty) and Sophia and Ana and Amanda Karfakis (Michael) and Andreas and other nieces, nephews, godchildren and dear friends both here and in Greece. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her beloved son, Pano Nickles and her cherished sister, Rena Giannoucos.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 25, 2016 at 1 pm at St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Church. Friends may call prior to the service from noon until 1 pm with Trisagion services scheduled to be held at 12:45 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Matoula's memory may be made to St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Church, 120 W. Seneca St., Ithaca, NY 14850.
