GEORGE P. NICKLES
George P. Nickles, 84, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 22, 2007 at the Beechtree Care Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Zoupena, Greece, son of the late Peter and Anna Caravossos Nickles.
George came to the United States in 1947 and by 1957 became co-owner of Pop's Place, a favorite Cornell University eatery. Since the closing of Pop's Place, George continued his work in the family business, Manos Diner, working hard each day beginning at 5 o'clock in the morning. Though working long hours, George always found time to serve his church, St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Church. He had served as president of the church community and had also served ten years on the parish council.
A loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, George is survived by his wife, Matoula Manos Nickles; his daughter, Anna (John) Stavropoulos and his grandchildren, Georgina and Matoula Rena Stavropoulos and George P. "Jory" and Jamie Nickles. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Bill (Paulette) Manos and Nick Giannoucos and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, George was also predeceased by his beloved son, Peter "Pano" Nickles, who suddenly and tragically left this world in 2004 as well as five brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 26, 2007 at 12 Noon at St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Church. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service beginning at 11 am. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in George's memory may be made to the St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Church, 120 W. Seneca St., Ithaca, NY 14850.
