Silas Craig was the son of Lewis and Mildred "Milly" (Smith) Craig. He was born 16 November 1813 in Gallatin County, Kentucky. He was the grandson of Benjamin and Nancy (Stuman) Craig. His uncle, Stuman Craig, had married Elizabeth and Phebe Easterday.

On June 3, 1841, the 27 year old Silas married 14 year old Docia Jane Easterday in Carroll County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of Thomas and Polina (Baker) Easterday.

Docia had lost her father before she was 8 years old and her mother in 1840. On March 10, 1841, Docia had inherited 92 acres and four slaves from the estate of her late father according to the Carroll County probate records, (book 1, pages 145-147).

Silas and Docia joined the Whites Run Baptist Church in September 1842. They lived in Carrollton.

Silas and Docia had 4 children:

  • Lewis Craig - (1843-1916) aged 72
  • Ann (Craig) Tandy - (1845-1918) aged 72
  • Thomas E Craig - (1847-1926) aged 78
  • James E Craig - (1850-1854) aged 4

On the 1850 census they were living with their 4 children in Carroll County. Also living with them was Docia's 16 year old brother, Abraham Easterday, Elizabeth North (18) and Nancy Sanders (60).

Docia died on 29 October 1852, at the age of 25, in Carroll County, Kentucky. She left behind 4 children aged 2 to 9

Four months after Docia died, on March 1, 1853, 39 year old Silas married 21 year old Mary Elizabeth North in Carroll County, not an uncommon thing in that time especially if young children were in the family. This was the same Elizabeth that was living with them in 1850.

Silas, as the husband of Docia, and their children and Docia's brother's inherited the land surrounding the cemetery when Docia's brother James died.  Carroll county Will Book 7, pages 306 & 307, July 13, 1860.

Silas and Elizabeth had 5 children:

  • Sanders Craig - (1854-1919) aged 64
  • Dotia Jane (Craig) Montgomery - (1856-1875) aged 19
  • Russell Tandy Craig - (1858-1936) aged 78
  • Victor Craig - (1861-1904) aged 42
  • Corry Craig - (1868-1870) aged 2

Silas died on 25 July 1871 at the age of 57 in Carroll County, Kentucky. He is buried in the northest corner of the Easterday cemetery about a half mile from the town of Easterday, Carroll County, Kentucky, with Docia Jane and several of his children.
