In Carroll County, Kentucky, at the intersection of Highway 36 and Highway 1112 (also known as Whites Run Road) is the community of Easterday. At this intersection are a few homes and the Whites Run Baptist Church, with a churchyard cemetery, on land deeded to the church by Lewis Easterday, Sr. in 1810.
From this intersection, you head south down Highway 1112. The road follows Whites Run Creek on its west side. About half a mile from the church is the Easterday cemetery. It is on the east side of the road but it cannot be seen from the road. The property surrounding this cemetery is private property even though the actual graveyard and right of way have been excluded from all deeds. It is about 300 feet from the road, up a steep hill, in a stand of trees. To access this cemetery you would need to pull into a driveway, before or after this spot, and be prepared for a difficult hike. I strongly suggest you obtain permission from the current owner first.
The cemetery is on land originally owned by Lewis Easterday, Sr. In more recent years the land was known as the Fothergill farm and has been passed down through the generations. This is a family cemetery. For each marker that has been recorded, a link can be made back to Lewis Easterday, Sr., or one of his descendants.
The first burial appears to have been in 1821, the last in 1918. There is a small marker in the center of the cemetery with just the year 1821 on it along with a burial of that year. Forty-six legible markers have been photographed as of 2023. There have been several different listings of the markers over the decades and there are 3 markers that have been recorded in some of these listings, but the markers have never been found to photograph. Several markers can no longer be read.
The cemetery has not been maintained for many years and is home to a community of very active groundhogs so their burrow holes are a hazard. Many of the markers have been toppled over the years, some down these holes and have been lost. Other markers were just scratching on fieldstones, so the stone may still be here however the etchings are long gone. Nature has made great progress in reclaiming this cemetery.
