Mildred Davis Ray, 87, of Athens, passed away peacefully on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 13, 2016, at her home. She was a native of Meigs County and was a longtime resident of McMinn County. A daughter of the late Sam and Maggie Walker Davis, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie Ray; three sisters, Tula Scoggins, Sue Land and Ina Lockmiller; and two brothers, Sam Davis, Jr. and Herman Davis.
She was a longtime member of Keith Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Sheila and Mike Tallent and Susan Ray, all of Athens; a special friend to Susan and Mildred, Philip Womack of Sweetwater; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Sharen Ray of Athens; one granddaughter and her husband, Laura and Bill Holaday; two grandsons, Matt Ray and his wife, Jennifer, and Adam Ray; two great-grandchildren, Nora Kate Holaday and Maddox David Ray; one sister, Veda Miller of Decatur; one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Careen Davis of Athens; several nieces and nephews; and her very special dog, Riley.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the special care given to Mildred by her caregivers, Sharon Anderson, Joyce Stewart and Amedisys Hospice.
Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, in the chapel of Smith Funeral & Cremation Services with the Rev. David Graybeal and Philip Womack, a family spokesperson, officiating. The committal service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Cedar Grove Cemetery and will conclude with a white dove release ceremony.
Pallbearers will be Matt Ray, Adam Ray, Bill Holaday, Larry Davis, Jimmy Land and Steve Miller.
The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home prior to the service.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to a charity of the giver's choice.
