Obituary:
Edna J. Cunningham, 94, of Maple Grove Apartments of Hiawatha, died Friday evening, December 8, 2006, at Oak Ridge Acres in Hiawatha where she had been a resident for three weeks.

Edna was born at Sabetha, June 11, 1912, one of fifteen children of George Washington and Margaret Ellen Dust Dean and was a northeast Kansas area resident her entire life. She worked at the Horton Garment Factory, Robinson School, and Hiawatha High School as a cook. She also worked at several nursing homes including the Brown County Infirmary prior to working as a nurse aide at the Hiawatha Community Hospital until retiring. Edna moved to Maple Grove Apartments, twenty-eight years ago, and was the last original member. She took on a few cleaning jobs and helped take care of several ladies at the Complex over the 28 years. Edna enjoyed her family, dancing, volunteer work with bingo at the nursing homes. She also enjoyed going on trips to Branson. The past several years, she enjoyed trips to the casino's playing penny and nickel slot machines. Mrs. Cunningham was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of Hiawatha; and a member of the ladies auxiliary to VFW Post #5210, of Hiawatha.

Edna married Guy Newman Cunningham, June 26, 1929 in Hiawatha. They farmed for nearly 25 years until selling and moving to Robinson prior to living in Hiawatha. He died July 5, 1972. She was also preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter Mildred Darlene Cunningham, and a son Dearld Richard Cunningham December 19, 2002. Survivors include her daughter-in-law Donna Wenger of Hiawatha; five grandchildren: Susan Roche and husband Steve of Topeka, Debbie Quirarte and husband Gene of St. Marys, Kansas, Sandy Yarger and husband Kenny of Hiawatha, Cindy Kramer and husband Wayne of Seneca, Richard Cunningham and wife Tina, also of Hiawatha; 17 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are planned for 2 p.m. Monday, December 11, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Cheryl Mishler will officiate. Interment will follow at the Sabetha Cemetery.
