Darby Kelly Elkins was an unusual individual. He was willing to take chances. Throughout his life, he lived a life, much like his brothers and sisters. Everyone married a farmer, or they were a farmer. He bought land. In 1838, he was able to buy 175 acres on 12 Pole Creek, in Cabell, WV.

Buying land between the Panic of 1837 and 1839, might not have affected him, however, it set the American economy on its ear. It fueled the worst economic depression this nation had known. It fired the collapse in consumption in the US. Why? Much of it had to do first with politics and then paying US debts. Our government went from a national bank, to a state bank system. When needed, money was not available to pay our country’s debts.

This depression powered massive migration from the east to the west. By the 1850’s people headed south. This county was still an agrarian society. People needed land. This gigantic migration powered the beginning of western migration across the Mississippi River . Darby and most of his family were among them.

The state of Missouri and the Missouri River existed as gateway to the Mississippi and unlimited opportunity. Sadly, Darby died and was buried Vernon County, Missouri. However, his family went on. Many, including his wife, to Crawford County, Arkansas.
