Logan, West Virginia, then Virginia, was established in 1824. Peter Dingess was its first settler. Many came afterward, including the Richard and Nancy Elkins family, from Montgomery County. Their family consisted of 12 Elkins children. Many of their grandchildren were to marry other settlers' descendants that had migrated to Logan in its early years.

James' siblings:

James, like his father and brothers, were farmers. Farming was a must to sustain a lively hood two hundred years ago. I was not able to find any recorded property deeds in a James' name, until 1847. It was for James & Martin Elkins. 47 acres at right head fork of Hewitt's Creek, Logan. Martin was this James' son, however, his father was rumored to have died nearly 5 years earlier. Or, this James could have been a cousin or missing son (see below)?

Shortly after Richard Elkins, James' father, arrived in Logan, WV, he was joined by two of his brothers, Zachariah and William both arriving with large families. James had already married Levinia / Lavina / Levina Elkins (1793-aft. 1870), daughter of his uncle, Zach, in 1815, in Cabell County, West Virginia.

Once again, children of this couple (James & Louvina / Levina) are not all confirmed, due to the lack of census, marriage, or death, etc., records. However, this couple did have 4 daughters recorded in the 1820 Cabell, WV census. All were born before between 1810 and 1820. In 1830, these 4 daughters showed up again. One, listed as 10-14. Three, 15-19 years old. One daughter under 5. There are also, 5 sons. A total of 10 children are under 20 years old.

• Rachel Elkins – recorded as born between 1806-
1812. Died 1889
• Christina Elkins – recorded as born in 1810.
Died 1881.
• Daniel Elkins (abt. 1817 – aft.1880)
• Levicy "Dicy" Elkins (abt. 1820-1872)
*Could also be the daughter of his brother,
William
• Robert "Robin" Elkins (abt.1822-1906)
• Drury / Drewry Elkins (1823-bef. 1880?)
* marriage record parents, R. Elkins & Luvena.
An error?
• Martin Elkins (1825-1859)
• St. Clair Elkins (abt. 1829- bef. 1870)

James has been recorded as dying in 1837, though I haven't seen a headstone or any official records. He was not in the 1840 or later census records. Levina lived until after 1870, never remarrying, dying in Washington, Boone, WV. She was recorded as residing with her son, Robert and family, in 1860. In 1870, living with her grandchild, Lorenzo McNeely's family.
