Mildred C. “Midge” Long, a long-time resident of Broadway, passed away on February 18, 2016. Midge was born on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1925 in Mathias, WV, and was the first born child of the late Grover C. and Ada Mathias Caplinger.

On June 5, 1943, Midge married Raymond Long, of Broadway, who predeceased her in 1985. She retired from Wampler Foods and was a member of Sunset Drive United Methodist Church in Broadway, where she remained active as long as her health allowed. She was always a caregiver and loved being part of the Meals on Wheels Program. Midge was a strong and independent woman who loved to read, mow her own lawn and was usually the first person in Broadway to shovel her sidewalk after a snowstorm.

A loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend, Midge is survived by two children, her son; Douglas and wife, Carolyn, of Chesterfield, and daughter; Sue Ellen Breeden and husband Jerry, of Standardsville. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law; Dawn Long, of Broadway. In addition, she is survived by four grandchildren; JoEllen Sirles and husband Rob, John Long and wife Michelle, Brandie Hensley and husband Duane, and MAC Mark Long (USN) and wife Kim, two step-grandchildren; Bryan Caricofe and wife Sara, Julie Mitchelson and husband Wister, five great-grandchildren; Samantha Sirles, Aidan Long, Taylor Long, Courtney Hensley, and Jenna Long, and six step great-grandchildren; Lily, Ryan, and Chloe Caricofe, Wyatt Hensley, and Riley and Sophia Mitchelson.

Also surviving are her brother; Edgar L. Caplinger, of Dayton and sister-in-law, Joyce Caplinger, of Springfield, as well as a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and their spouses and children.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her beloved son, John Thomas Long, her sister Lorraine Fitzwater, and brother, Franklin D. Caplinger. Midge will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation for the loving care and attention given Midge by all her caregivers and friends.

Chaplin Irene Mongold will conduct a graveside service Friday February, 26th at 9 AM in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Mathias, WV.
