Son of Stacey Stephens and Elizabeth Hatfield. His children include Ella Elizabeth and Willie M. Stephens.

Azariah Stephens died very suddenly of heart failure at his home in Clinton township October 29, 1902. He was born in Greene county, Pa. June 30, 1821, was married Feb 1843 to Miss Clarissa Steel. To this union eight children were born, six of which survive him. Mrs. Stephens died October 23, 1900, since which time Uncle Azariah made his home with his son, T.J. Stephens. Deceased was a life-long member of the Missionary Baptist church. He died as he had always lived, a devoted Christian, a conscientious citizen and a scrupulously honest man. He always carried his Christianity with him in all his dealings with his fellowman, and his open, Straight-forward manner of transacting business always left good impressions. His early life was spent in a Christian home and those noble influences and impressions that he so dearly cherished in his boyhood remained with him through his four score years, and the stars that shone so brightly in his Christian life here will continue to shine on through eternity. The funeral services were held at his late residence and were conducted by Rev. William Golding, of Blockton. His remains were buried at Brushy cemetery beside those of his wife who preceded him just three years ago

Azariah Stephens was born near Whitley, Greene County, Penn, June 30, 1821, and died at his home near Redding Oct 29, 1902, being 81 years, three months, and 29 days old. He was a farmer all his life. He was married near Davistown, Penn, Feb 13, 1845, to Miss Clara Steele. To them were born 8 children, two of whom are dead. he and his wife joined the Goshen Baptist church in 1848. In 1880, they came to Ringgold county and helped to organize the Baptist church at Blockton in 1884. he remained a faithful member until his death. His wife died two years and two days prior to his death. He leaves to mourn his death six children: Mrs. J K Parshall of Clearfield, Mrs. J F Wright of Mt Ayr, Mrs R M Bowlby of Liberty township, Stacy and John R Stephens of Delphos, and T J Stephens of Redding, and a score of relatives and friends. At the last he had no pain and with a smile on his face he said "You can do no more-it will soon be over" The funeral service was conducted from his late residence by Rev. William Golding of Blockton, and the remains laid to rest in the Redding cemetery.
