Sarah's parents are presumed to be Gideon Church and Phebe Soule. Parentage for Sarah is based of the following information:

1. Sarah was born in Westport, Massachusetts and her father Gideon was born in Little Compton, Rhode Island which is about 8 miles west of Westport. Gideon was in Westport on the 1790 Census where he is listed with one male under 16 (his son Randall) and six females. By 1790, Gideon and Phebe had four daughters and one son so these numbers match their presumed children with the exception of one additional female who may have been Phebe's mother (Sarah Potter) as Phebe's father (Stephen Soule) died around April of 1789. Stephen Soule's will mentions his daughter as "Phebe Church".

2. On the 1800 census for Augusta, Maine, there is only one entry for anyone named Church. It is Gideon Church on page 5 of 6 in the census and there is also an entry on page 5 for a family headed by William Stone only two lines above the entry for Gideon Church. (See the photos for a screenshot.) This William Stone is presumed to be Warren's father, Capt. William Stone. Since Sarah's husband Warren was born in 1776, he would have been 24 at the time of the 1800 census and should be one of the two males of the right age listed in the family of William Stone. Also, in this census, Gideon has a daughter between 17 and 26 who is presumed to be Sarah as she would have been 22 in 1800.

3. On the 1850 census, Sarah listed her place of birth as Massachusetts. While Maine did not split off from Massachusetts until 1820, the fact that Sarah listed her place of birth as Massachusetts is another indicator that she was Gideon's daughter since Gideon did not move to Maine until 1799.

4. The abridged text below was transcribed from the original document (privately held) exactly as written by descendant Eldora Louise Scribner when she asked her mother, Ann Sophronia Stone, to tell her about her life.

Alameda, California, Sept 29, 1905

Mother will be 69 years old, the 16th of October 1905.

She sat and gave me this history at her home on Clinton Avenue, Alameda, California.

"My mother's name was Stone, and my grandmother Stone's name was Church before she married Warren Stone. The Ancestors of the Stones, Churches and Choats came over on the May Flower from England; All English except Grandmother Choat, she was from Holland. Grandmother was educated in German and English.

My great grandmother Choat settled in Windsor, Maine over 100 years before this was written. She was educated in German and English. She was 90 years old when she died.

Great Grand Mother Stone's name was Church. She had black eyes. She was married twice, her first husband's name was Cyphers. There were 8 boys and 4 girls. Great Grand Mother Choat's name was (blank spaces) Embassador Choat's father was a cousin of my grandmother Stone. Embassador Choat's father and Rufus Choat, the (blank spaces) were brothers. Rufus Choat is dead. Father Scribner was born in Bridgewater, Maine. His father came from Scotland, and Grand Mother Scribner was born in Maine. Her name was Pierce. Grand ma Stone died at the age of 89 years. Died in 1888. Grand Pa Stone died October 29, 1869 died of typhoid fever. Grand Ma Stone had black eyes."

Note: The Choates were English, not Dutch. The first name of Sarah's husband who was a Cyphers has not yet been found but it should be noted that Sarah's brother Randall Church married Didama Cyphers. Grandpa Stone refers to Warren's son Milton who died in 1869.

For additional information, see George Soule and his Descendants in the Fifth and Sixth Generations pages 75 - 76.

Sarah and Warren were married on 18 Sep 1806 in Augusta and they had at least six children:

1. Susan Stone b. 9 Aug 1804 d. aft 1880
2. Unknown Stone (daughter) b. 6 Apr 1807 d. 23 May 1807
3. Merlita Stone b. 14 Mar 1809 d. 1891
4. Sophronia Stone b. 1817 - 1861 In the American Advocate edition of 21 March 1828 (screenshot is in photos) is the marriage announcement for her sister Merlita who married Moses Choate. The Sophronia Stone who is listed immediately before Merlita is presumed to be this Sophronia, the sister of Merlita, and it might have been a double wedding. She married her distant cousin Isaac Stone (1794 - 1877).
5. Milton M. Stone b. 21 Jul 1813 d. 2 Nov 1869
6. Charles W. Stone b. May 1820 d. 11 May 1905

The notice of her death copied below is from page 3 of the 18 May 1854 edition of the Maine Farmer newspaper:

"In this city, 15th inst., very suddenly, SARAH S. STONE, wife of Warren Stone; aged 76."

Sarah's marker is immediately to the right of Warren's.
