Alice Firebaugh, 90
Alice Sophie (Sorenson) Firebaugh was born July 22, 1910 in Racine Wisconsin to Peter and Minnie (Sorenson) Sorenson.
She attended Racine public schools.
Although her mother and baby sister died in the 1918 flu epidemic, she had an interesting childhood. At the age of 16, her father took her to Denmark by ship to visit her grandparents and other relatives for three months.
In 1929, she started working at Western Printing in Racine and continued to work there until the fall of 1944. She also met her future husband, Merrill Firebaugh in 1929. Merrill and Alice were married on May 28, 1932. Merrill joined the Navy Seabees during World War II and served in the South Pacific. After he was discharged, they moved to Tracy and started Firebaugh Welding & Machine Company. Alice did all the bookkeeping for the business until they retired in 1971.
Alice was a member of the Tracy United Methodist Church and served on various circles. She was also active in the Eastern Star and the Wheels Across the Prairie Museum. She would volunteer whenever a volunteer was needed. She and Merrill will always be remembered for driving their 1906 AutoBug, which was the first car in Tracy, in the Box Car Day Parades. The car is now in the Wheels Across the Prairie Museum.
Merrill died in 1994 and in 1995, Alice moved into the O'Brien Court Apartments. She enjoyed her new home and all the people who made living in O'Brien Court fun and interesting. She gained many new friends. On the day before her 90th birthday, she attended the New Ulm Heritage Fest and spent 10 hours enjoying every minute.
Alice died on Friday, October 20, 2000 at the Weiner Memorial Hospital in Marshall from complications following surgery.
Alice is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marcy and Fred Schramm of Plymouth, MN; three grandchildren, Dennis Campbell of Tracy, MN; Scott Campbell and wife Kim and Robyn Campbell all of California; six great grandchildren, Shanna, Brandy, Jager, Trisha, Brandon and Colby; a half-sister, Esther Sorenson; cousin, Diana Brodek and husband Dick; brother-in-law, Ray Firebaugh and wife Hazel; two nephews, Ron Firebaugh and wife Norma and Jim Firebaugh; "special daughters," Karen Kolze, Nancy Craig, Cindy Swenhaugen, Bonnie Buysse and Diana Campbell; and her dear friends Sophie Kretchmer and Lydia Mentjes.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, husband Merrill, daughter Russy Campbell, brothers and sister.
