Walfred Henry Matson, 86, died July 7, 2016, at his home.

Services were held Tuesday, July 12, at Evangelical Free Church in Sandstone.

Arrangements were by Methven Funeral Home of Sandstone.

Wally was born March 21, 1930, in Finlayson to Henry and Jennie Matson. He married Mildred (Millie) Amberg of New York Mills August 16, 1953. They made their home in Finlayson until 1962 when they moved to rural Hinckley.

Wally graduated from Finlayson High School in 1948 and served three years of active duty during the Korean War in the US Army, 2ND Infantry, 72nd Tank Battalion. Wally kept an active dairy farm while working as a counselor at Moose Lake State Hospital then later at the Federal Prison in Sandstone until he retired in 1980. He worked six years for the Pine County Dairy Herd Improvement Association where he spent numerous enjoyable hours on dairy farms across the county. He accepted a position in 1986 as a counselor for community involvement programs, where he retired in January 2016.

Wally was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Kenneth, James and Richard Matson; foster brother, Melvin Jauhola; daughter, Yvonne Beltran and her husband Adelfo Rameriz; Son, Rick Matson; and his wife, Mildred Matson.
