The betrothal of the couple was announced at an informal gathering Saturday evening in the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. Bernard Belker, 731 North Sixteenth street. Saturday, December 30, is the date set for the ceremony, which will be solemnized in St. Francis Catholic church, at 7 o'clock nuptial mass.
Miss Belker also announced her wedding plans. Miss Helen Belker, her niece, will be bridesmaid, and her sister, Mrs. Larry Siebers, will act as Matron of Honor.
Marshall Hobart will serve as best man for Mr. Smelser, and Charles and Albert Belker, brothers of the bride-elect, will be the ushers.
The Reverend Landelin Belker, O. F. M., of Teutopolis, brother of the bride-elect, will be celebrant of the mass. Father Landelin celebrated his first mass in Quincy in St. Francis church on July 2.
Miss Belker has chosen old rose, and peacock blue, for her wedding colors.
The attractive bride-elect is a graduate of Notre Dame of Quincy, and is a member of the Notre Dame Alumnae Association. She has been prominent with the Young Ladies' Sodality, and the mixed choir. She is employed at the H. R. H. Silk Hosiery Mills, Inc.
Mr. Smelser is connected with one of the city's well known families. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Smelser. His father is one of the city's leading photographers. The younger Mr. Smelser is a graduate of the Quincy high school. He is employed at the Electric Wheel company. Mr. Smelser attends St. Peter Catholic church.
