Rachel Burks Childress, 80, of Appomattox, died Wednesday, November 3, 2010, at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late John William Childress, Jr.

Born in Buckingham County, on December 27, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Josiah and Bessie Wright Burks. Rachel was a member of Maple Grove Pentecostal Church and attended the House of Prayer. She was a retired seamstress with Courtland Manufacturing and a former Appomattox County school bus driver.

She is survived by a son, J. W. (Peewee) Childress, III and wife, Brenda of Gladstone; three daughters, Amanda Branch of Newport News, Evelyn (Sister) McDonald and husband, James of Hampton, and Crystal McCormick and husband, Donnie of Appomattox; a sister, Christine Light of Appomattox; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and her special caregivers, Bernice Thomas and Angela Broadwater.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. Jerry Childress. Burial followed in the Burks Family Cemetery.

The family received friends at the funeral home Friday, Nov. 5, from 7-8:30 p.m. and other times at the home of Peewee, 536 Mockingbird Lane, Gladstone and at the home of Crystal, 227 Avery Lane, Appomattox.
