Josiah Carlyle Burks, 76, of Charlottesville passed away on June 22, 2009 at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Born March 13, 1933 in Buckingham County, he was the son of the late Bessie and Josiah Burks. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Cunningham and Frances Moore; and three brothers, Clyde Burks, Roy Burks and Fulmer Burks.
Joe retired from CSX railroad after forty-one years of service and owned his own trucking business, Burks' Hauling, for over fifty years. He enjoyed NASCAR auto racing and owned several race cars over the years. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and Grace Baptist Church.
Surviving him are his wife of fifty-four years, Mildred Eloise McCormick Burks of Charlottesville; one son, Kenny C. Burks and his wife, Pam of Brownsburg; one daughter, Teresa Wimmer and her husband, Donny, of Charlottesville; two grandsons, Kristofer Joseph Wimmer and Jordan Matthew Burks; three sisters, Rachel Childress, Christine Light and Helen Warburton; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special companion, a dog named Benji.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. He will be truly missed.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, June 25, 2009 in Holly Memorial Gardens.
