Pioneer settler of Monument Springs. Star rodeo performer and champion steer roper.He was one of the worlds' top steer ropers, unofficial mayor of Lea County New Mexico and in 1920 won the Texas Steer Roping Championship.Bert performed in rodeos throughout the western N. America from 1902 until he retired in 1952. In the early 1930s and 1940s he officiated at many big time shows , such as the Calgary Stampede, and Cheyenne Frontier Days. As did many, Bert endured hardships in life, rode hundreds of miles of trails, roped a bear or two and hundreds of steers, and won his fair share of rodeo medals.
James Elbert 'Bert" Weir was a son of former Texas Ranger William Fletcher Weir and Ellen Gray Johnson. He, along with his family moved from Glasscock County, Texas to Monument , New Mexico Territory in 1906. His grandparents were Elbert Pleasant Berry Weir and Delilah Jane Holt. He was first married to Mary Brevard Dunson (1892-1966) and then later married Omah Vivian Wells ( 1897-2001)
