Thomas 'Gaines' Weir was a son of William Fletcher Weir (1854-1937) and Ellen Grey Johnson (1858-1952). At a early age the family moved from Texas to Monument , Lea County, New Mexico where his father purchased the historial "Hat Ranch". Thomas was the very first casualty of Lea County when he died the the flu epidemic at Camp Dix in New Jersey. A historical Monument was erected in Lea County to honor the 40 soldiers that lost their lives during WWI. He was not married.Died of pneumonia while serving in the United States Army. Stationed at Camp Dix, New Jersey.
