CANASTOTA >> Florence M. Lessard, 93, of Maple Downs Retirement Residence, Fayetteville, and formerly of 121 Pleasant St., Canastota, died on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at the VA Medical Center, Syracuse, following a sudden illness.
She was born on Feb. 14, 1923, in Windsor, N.Y., a daughter of Thomas and Beatrice (Jacobs) Bottle.
Florence spent her early years in Greene, N.Y., and was a 1941 graduate of Greene High School. She lived in Canastota from 1965-2010, and spent the winters in Brooksville, Fla., for several years.
She was a World War II veteran, serving overseas as a WAVE in the US Navy.
Florence was a member of the American Legion Charles Miller Post No. 140 of Canastota, and a past local, county, and 6th District President of the American Legion Auxiliary; a member of 8 and 40 La Boutique Des Huit; a former member of Friends of the Library in Canastota; an election inspector for 30 years; a former 4-H member in Greene and Canastota; and a member and past president of the Canastota Garden Club. She loved gardening, baking, crafts, wii bowling, cards, Bingo, and spending time with family and friends
She was also a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Canastota, where she had been a Sunday School teacher, cooked many a turkey dinner, and more apple pies than you can count.
Florence married William A. Lessard on June 18, 1946, in Greene. Bill died on June 1, 2013. They had been married for 67 years. They met in Hawaii where they were both serving in the Navy.
She and Bill received the Humanitarian Award from the Canastota Chamber of Commerce in 1990.
Surviving are: one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Susan Lessard of Rexford, N.Y.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cecile and James Dore of Cortland, and Colette and Frank Coppola of Canastota; two sisters, Mary Lindsay of Binghamton, and Viola Bramkamp of Rexford, N.Y.; nine grandchildren, James (Lucila) Lessard, Edward (Heather) Lessard, Renee (Christopher) Catalfano, Karen (Jason) Carlton, Christopher (Leah) Dore, Amy (Tom) Landry, Emily (Timothy) Goeltz, Kurt Coppola, and Sean Coppola; and eight great-grandchildren, Patrick, Jonah and Seth Carlton, Nicholas and Oliva Lessard, Rylee and Samantha Catalfano, and Maddie Landry; a special son-in-law, Jim Bickford; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Florence was predeceased by a daughter, Carol Bickford; two brothers, Henry and James Bottle; and three sisters, Mabel Bohling, Elsie Churchsmith, and Louise Hannum.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2016, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 341 Main St., Oneida. The Rev. Arthur W. "Nick" Smith will officiate. Burial with Military Honors will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Canastota. Calling hours will be held on Saturday from 10-11:30 a.m. at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James St., Canastota. In her memory, contributions may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 26, Canastota, N.Y. 13032, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
