He was the son of John DeVaughn Stevens and Mary Ellen Simmons. He married Eloise Mixson 27 Feb 1930 in Coffee County, Al. As pastor of numerous Assembly of God churches, they made their home in many locations including Lomax Tabernacle in 1934, Dothan early 1940's, Prichard (now Lakeview) 1949-1959, Eastwood in Columbus, Ga in the 1960's, and Ft. Walton from 1970-1973 when he retired after more than 40 years in the ministry.
Their first child, Nina Ruth Stevens was born and died in Sylacauga, Alabama at the age of two and was buried at Old Tabernacle Cemetery.
