John was the 2nd child and son of the 12 children of Joel C. and Elizabeth "Woodmansee" Gregory, and born in Jackson Co., Ind. John married Sarah A. Phillips April 01, 1858 in Jackson Co., Ind. John was a Wagon Maker. They had 2 children/sons by 1860. He fought for the Union in the Civil War as a Private in Co. 1, Unit 130th Illinois Infantry. He enlisted 09-09-1862 at Camp Butler, ILL. John was transferred to Co 1, 77 Illinois Inf. He was discharged in Aug. of 1865. John fought at Vicksburg, Baton Rouge, and Murfreesboro and was on detached service during the remainder of the war. John was a prisoner for nearly a year, bladder and rheumatism. After returning from the war John and Elizabeth had their 3rd son Jacob Jeptha in 1866. John's wife Elizabeth died in 1867, cause unknown at this time. By the 1880 census John had moved to Casey KY and farmed. He lived there alone until his death in August 1910. At this time I do not know the place of his burial.
