Alma A. Anderson was born on December 11, 1889, in Alexandria, Minnesota, the daughter of John and Ann Greta (Larson) Anderson. during her early years, Alma helped out at the Anderson Furniture Company, which her father founded. After completing high school, Alma attended Normal School to prepare herself for a teaching position. She taught in Alexandria a year and a half before filling out a term as superintendent of schools. Alma then enrolled in the Columbia University in New York city majoring in Nursing.
In 1926 Alma and her sister, Edna, opened the Hostess House in Alexandria on the location where the Anderson Funeral Home now sits. In 1934, the business was moved to the corner of 7th and Cedar Streets where the Hostess House operated for several years and Alma made her residence there until 1978 when she entered Bethany Home.
Alma was a member of Chapter AO PEO women's club and a life-long member of Calvary Lutheran Church.
She died June 29, 1981, at the Bethany Home at the age of 91 years. She is survived by four nephews: Dr. Theodore Erickson of Madison, Wisconsin, Dr. Cyrus Erickson of Memphis, Tennessee, Raymond Anderson of Alexandria and Karl John Anderson of Alexandria; three nieces Marguerite Graban of Redding, California, Margaret Hermanson of Golden Valley and Frances Erickson of Minneapolis. Alma was preceded in death by her parents and seven brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were July 1, 1981 from Calvary Lutheran Church of Alexandria, with Rev. Thomas Junkert officiating. Interment was in Kinkead Cemetery of Alexandria. Pallbearers were Darrel Flaig, Carl Roers, George Wagner, Steven Anderson, David Anderson and Carl Robert Anderson. Arrangements with Anderson Funeral Home.
