Funeral services for Carl V. Anderson, veteran Alexandria businessman, were held at the Calvary Lutheran church Saturday afternoon. Anderson died last Thursday morning at the age of 76 after having suffered a stroke about a week ago. Rev. Nels E. Bengtson, pastor of the church, conducted the services, assisted by several of Mr. Anderson's old friends, Rev. A. T. Tjornhom, now of Fergus Falls, Dr. O. O. Gustafson, now of Dassel, and Rev. H. T. Sprengeler of Leaf Valley. Pallbearers were: George Wagner, Carl Roers, Gerhart Linser, Tom Pennar, Cliff Johnson and Louis P. Schroeder.
Anderson is survived by his wife, who is now recovering from a shoulder fracture sustained in a fall about the same time her husband became ill, two sons, Paul and Karl John, and two sisters, Mabel C. (Mrs. T. A. Erickson) of St. Paul, and Alma of Alexandria. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Anderson, a brother, John J., and two sisters, Hannah and Edna. Another sister, Ida, and another brother, William, died in infancy.
Carl V. Anderson was born in Alexandria on Nov. 30, 1878. He was graduated from the Alexandria high school in 1896 and immediately went to work in his father's store. He soon became a partner, and upon his father's death in November of 1905, he became owner of the business.
On Aug. 11, 1915, he married Esther H. Bergquist. One son, Karl John, was born Nov. 2, 1916, and Paul H., the second son, was born July 16, 1918.
Under Carl V. Anderson's direction, the Anderson Furniture Co., one of the oldest business places in Alexandria, became one of the largest furniture companies in western Minnesota.
Carl V. Anderson was one of the first men to receive an embalmer's license in the state of Minnesota. This license was issued in 1898 and at one time there were only three men in the state with longer service under this license than Anderson.
Like his father, John Anderson, and his late brother, John J. Anderson, Carl V. Anderson took an active part in local civic affairs. He served on the city council for one year and in 1930 was elected mayor of Alexandria. He served as mayor for five consecutive terms.
He was a Knight Templar Mason, a member of the Osman Temple of the Mystic Shrine at St. Paul, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Kiwanis club, Chamber of Commerce and the Alexandria Golf Club. He was a life long member of the Swedish Lutheran church.
Carl V. Anderson, also continued the Anderson family tradition of maintaining the combined furniture store-funeral home business which has been in operation for more than 70 years. As such, he served as director of the Minnesota State Funeral Directors association at one time.
Anderson Furniture was established in Alexandria in 1872 by Carl V. Anderson's father. In some homes of Douglas county can be found pieces of furniture which were hand-made at the original Anderson Furniture store.
John Anderson served as mayor of Alexandria for two terms and also served on the city council. John J. Anderson, the late Carl V. Anderson's brother, also served as mayor for two terms and served one term in the state legislature.
