Jake Smith, 54, of 5910 N. Sleepy Hollow Road, Monticello, died at 8:25 a.m. June 13, 1997, in White County Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient two days. He had been in failing health the past two years.

Born April ll, 1943, in Attica, he was the son of George G. Sr. and Alice Arndt Christopher Smith. His marriage was on Sept. 2, 1966, in Lafayette, to Clara Jean Peffley, who survives.

He was a 1961 graduate of White Institute in Indianapolis.

He worked at the former Lox Equipment Co. of Delphi from 1976 to 1993 and then worked for Kelly Construction in Lafayette.

Mr. Smith was a member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 157 of Terre Haute.

He enjoyed woodworking and fishing.

Also surviving are one son, Roger D. Smith of Monticello; two daughters, April L. Shaw of Delphi and Kim Messer of Monticello; four brothers, John E. Smith of West Lafayette, Fred A. Smith of Monticello, George Smith Jr. of Bakersfield, Calif., and Tim Mounts of West Point; three sisters, Nancy Keith and Lois Martin, both of Delphi, and Wreatha Hunt of Star City; two stepbrothers, Ed Christopher of Lafayette and John Christopher of Kaukauna, Wis.; five grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister.

Services were Monday at Abbott Funeral Home with Pastor Daniel May officiating. Burial was in IOOF Memorial Gardens, Pittsburg. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Association.
