Our mother was born in Godley, Johnson Co., TEXAS in 1908. She was the daughter of James Albert Kinser and Donna Callie Moore. THE FAMILY CONSISTED OF SISTERS, ELGIE, FARRIS MARGARET AND BROTHER ALBERT. THE NICKNAME "SKEETER" CAME FROM HER FATHER. MOTHER WAS A DIMINUATIVE WOMAN. SHE WAS 5 FEET TALL AND NEVER WEIGHED MORE THAN 110 LBS. EVEN WHEN PREGNANT. After the family moved to Abilene, Texas she started to high school and finished 11TH Grade. Mom was in Abilene high school for her last year but decided to drop out and go to beautician school. Her mother had saved up some money and told her to sign up and start beauty school. The cost was fifty dollars for the whole year It was a work program back in those days. She worked and learned the business with Mrs. Guest. then she opened up her own shop in Waddington's department store in downtown Abilene Mother finished beauty school in 1920 and worked in that profession for 70 years. Closing her final shop in August of 1990 when she came to live with family in Bastrop, Texas.
In 1960 when our father died mom and a partner bought her last beauty shop and worked there for ten years when she sold it in 1967. She had saved enough money to fly to Europe and spend a month with Ron,Mary and 3 grand children traveling around all Europe. When she returned she began a nomadic life style living first in Houston then Sweetwater and finally back to Abilene until she moved to Bastrop in 1990 and then to San Antonio in 1995 to a retirement center close to her sister Farris and brother in law, Ed Conley.
During these many years she has taken trips not only to Europe but to Hawaii, the Northeast states such as Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, and Maine, and a Carrabian cruise.
In the fall of 2005 her heart began to fail and the doctors informed us that she had mitrial valve stenosis, but there was a surgery possible. She looked the medics in the eye and said "I am a 97 year old Christian lady and I am prepared to leave here without further medical assistance". About 2 weeks later her condition had worsened and she quietly passed away. Having been a member of the First Baptist Church of Abilene, Texas For many years We asked the pastor of that Church, Dr. Phil Christopher, to conduct the service on Dec. 31, 2005.She was interred beside her husband and our father, John W.Humphrey. Garden of Peace,lot 8 section T, space 4.
She led a life of quiet Christian commitment and was an example to us all. She is survived by her sister Farris Conley her son Ronald and daughter Nancy Robertson. 6 grand children and 7 great grand children all of whom she dearly loved. all of the grand children served as pall bearers.
In May of 1995 while my wife and I were traveling around the country in our RV, we asked Mother and my sister, Nancy if they would like to go to Branson, Missouri.to visit as many shows as we could. On the way there we spent the first evening in the Buffalo River wilderness area in Arkansas. A beautiful camp ground and scenery. Next day we traveled on to Branson. i don't remember how many shows we saw, but it was a lot. however, one stands out for Mother above all the rest. Mother had always been a great fan of the Lennon sisters that appeared on the Lawrence Welk TV show weekly. So that year they were appearing at Branson and Mother got to see them. After the show they invited all the fans to meet them in the entrance to the theater. Mother talked to them and told them how she had seen them on the welk show for years. They appreciated hearing Mother tell them about that experience. They were very gracious and a lovely group of young women. To say Mother enjoyed herself that evening is an under statement. We will never forget that evening.

Her husband, Jay W. Humphrey, whom she married on October 25, 1930, in Abilene, preceeded Mrs. Humphrey in death on December 7, 1960. She moved from Abilene to Bastrop in 1990 to be near family.
Survivors include her son, Ronald M. Humphrey and wife,Mary, 0f Bastrop; her daughter, Nancy Robertson and husband, Dale of Tomball,Texas; a sister
,
Farris Conley of San Antonio; Six grandchildren Devon Humphrey, Blair Humphrey, Rhett Humphrey, Tanya Robertson, Dane Robertson, and Heath Robertson; ten great-grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews.
Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. .Saturday in Elmwood , Memorial Park with Dr. Phil Christopher officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 12 noon today at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be her six grandchildren.
