Hugh McWhorter was born 1670 in County Armagh, North Ireland to Rev. Alexander and Phoebe Bruen McWhorter. He married in 1710 at County Armagy, North Ireland Jean Gillespie the daughter of Andrew G and Mary Frears Gillespie of Clackmannan, Ayrshire, Scotland. By occupation he was a successful Linen Merchant. The following was taken in part from Ulster Heritage Magazine, "Capt Hance Hamilton led a fleet containing 140 families that landed at New Castle, Delaware in 1729 Considering the arrival time it is almost certain that Hugh and family were among the families that Capt Hance Hamilton brought to New Castle.
After arrival Hugh settled his family on farmland in Pencader Hundred, located in New Castle County where he resided until his death. He brought with him his wife Jane (Jean) and children Agnes, Jane, & John. An older son Alexander is reported to have trained for the ministry at the University of Edinburgh, remained overseas and died about 1734. A second son was Named Alexander after his brother that died the same year of his birth.
Hugh became an extensive and successful farmer and was an Elder of the Presbyterian Church near the village of Middletown, generally called "The Forest Congregation". This was located near the Lancaster County, Pennsylvania line, which at that time covered a very large area. Many of these Scotch-Irish families that came to New Castle pushed on into Pennsylvania and founded settlements there and then later on to Virginia and the Carolinas.
Hugh and Jean are reported to have had 11 Children.
