John McWhorter was born in July, 1714 in County Armagh, North Ireland to Hugh and Jane Gilispie McWhorter later of New Castle, Delaware and York County, Pennsylvania.
In 1752 he moved his family from York County, Pennsylvania to to the Davidson Creek Settlement area in Rowan County, North Carolina area which is now in Iredell County covered by the waters of Lake Norman. He took up land not too far distance on the banks of Rocky River. He is shown on the Rowan County, North Carolina Census in 1755 and again in 1760. His is also listed on the 1759 and 1768 Rowan County Tax list.
on 2 June 1761 He with his wife Mary Conveyed to his son Hance McWhorter for 34 pounds 300 acres of land adjoining Alexander Osborn, John Bevard, and Robert Brecard. This land was located on the banks of the Rocky River as shown on a later land grant to his son Hance.
John Died in 1769 at age 55 on his Plantation located on the Rocky River which runs very near where he was buried.
