Lydia Carr was b 4 Feb 1774, North Haven, the d/o Benjamin Carr & Ruth Baxter. She was a twin with Benjamin Carr, Jr. She d 19 Aug 1841, North Haven.

Lydia married twice. She first married John Brown 8 May 1792, Thomaston (Thomaston intentions). John was b 15 Nov 1761, Cumberland, R I, the s/o Abial Brown & Abigail Bucklin. He d 26 Feb 1817, North Haven.

Marriage Intentions: The Intentions of Marriage between John Brown and Lydia Carr, both of Thomaston, were entered with me May 8, 1792. Attest John Dillaway, Town Clerk. Thomaston Vital Records, Volume 1, p 109.

Lydia married 2nd Samuel Calderwood on 16 Dec 1821, North Haven, married by David Woster, Jr. Samuel was b 10 Dec 1761, Dedham, Ma, the s/o John Calderwood & Elizabeth McCurdy. Samuel died 6 Mar 1842, Vinalhaven. Samuel married 1st Mary Douglass on 31 July 1791, North Haven. She was b 26 Dec 1768, Damariscotta, Me, the d/o Robert Douglass & Barbara Alexander. Mary d 5 Nov 1840, Vinalhaven.

Marriage Annoucement: In Vinalhaven, Mr Samuel Calderwood, age 60, to Widow Lydia Brown, age 48, after a courtship of about 15 days. Independent Chronicle & Boston Patriot. 24 April 1822, "Matrimony Notice", Page 1, Vol 15, issue 4278, NEHGS

There are two earlier houses, one in the orchard north of the present day (1987) house, and a log cabin between the cemetery (Old Brown) and the shore. John's sister, Sarah Brown, also removed to North Haven with him. She never married and is also buried in Old Brown Cemetery.

11 March 1793: Waterman Hewett of Vinalhaven, housewright, for 141 pounds paid by John Brown of Vinalhaven, millwright, 133 acres. Beginning at a birch tree marked at the North Shore of the Northern Island, thence running south by easterly by land of Charles Stewart and others about 440 rods to a fir tree marked at the southwestern corner of John Cooper's land now in occupation of Robert Douglass, thence westerly 58 rods by land of Stephen Carver to a stake and stone in the southeasterly corner of Samuel Lewis' land, thence northerly by said Lewis' land and ad [sic[ John Brown's land about 460 rods to a fire tree marked at the sea shore, thence east by said shore to the bounds first mentioned, said lot being 44 rods in width from east to west. 5 July 1795: Jonathan Smith of Vinalhaven, yeoman, for 20 pounds paid by John Brown, Vinalhaven, housewright, 50 acres. Starting at the North Shore at a fire tree marked on 4 sides, thence running south 9 1/2 degrees east a certain number of rods to land of Michael Bowings [sic: Bowen's] at a spruce tree marked on 4 sides, thence running south 83 degrees west 35 rods to a stake and stone, thence running northerly 9 and half degrees west to an oak tree marked on 4 sides, thence as the shore lays to the bounds first mentioned. Signed by Jonathan Smith; witnessed by William Vinall, Levi Smith. Registered in Ellsworth on 6 July 1795.

6 July 1795: John Brown of Vinalhaven, housewright, for 20 pounds, paid by Levi Smith of Vinalhaven, 22 acres. Beginning at North Shore by land of John Brown at a fir tree marked on 4 sides, running southerly 53 degrees east 7 chains, then running southerly 22 1/2 degrees 5 chains, thence southerly 24 degrees west 4 chains and 50 links to a pine stump at the saw mill, thence running 57 degrees west 9 chains and 50 links to a maple tree marked on 4 sides for a corner bound, thence running northerly 9 1/2 degrees west 24 chains to an oak tree marked on 4 sides, then around as the shore lays to the first mentioned bounds. Signed by John Brown; witnessed by William Vinall and Jonathan Smith. Registered at Ellsworth on 15 July 1795. [Note: given the mention of the saw mill which was located at Northern Harbor Stream (now Mill Stream), this particular lot of land was the western part of the land sold to John from Jonathan Smith.

7 July 1795: John Brown of Vinalhaven, housewright, for 50 pounds paid by Levi Smith, of Vinalhaven, 50 acres. Beginning at a fir tree marked on 4 sides by land of Robert Douglass, thence running southerly 83 degrees westerly to a fir tree marked on 4 sides 60 rods, thence running northerly 9 1/2 degrees west 140 rods by land of Michael Bowen's to a fir tree marked on 4 sides, thence running northerly 83 degrees easterly to a stake and stone to the land of James Cooper, thence running by the land of Thomas Cooper to the bounds first mentioned. 7 July 1795. Signed by John Borwn, witnessed by William Vinall and Jonathan Smith. Registered in Ellsworth on 15 July 1795.

24 July 1796: John Brown of Vinalhaven, housewright, for $100 pounds from George Brown of Vinalhaven, housewright....Beginning at a stake & stones standing at the mouth of the North Harbour Creek, then northerly to the shore of North Island, thence running 22 degrees 1/2 west 5 chains 50 links to a pine stump near a saw mill, thence running south 56 degrees west through the middle of said saw mill 9 chains 50 links to a maple tree marked on 4 sides, thence south course by land of Levi Smith to a stake & stones, thence turning and running an easterly course at right angles with the last line by the end of Michael Bowen's land 35 rods by a pine tree marked on 4 sides, thence turning right a southerly course to the side of said Bowen's land about 90 rods to a fir tree marked on 4 sides, then running east 56 rods to a stake & stones on the land of James Cooper, then running north by said Cooper's land and land of Charles Stewart, about 300 rods to a birch tree standing near the shore, then as the shore lies to the bounds first mentioned, with all the buildings. April 1800, Vinalhaven Vital Records: Voted that the second [school] District go from Robbins' Point to Penelope Winslow & John Brown in a straight line.

John is found on North Haven for the 1800 census with 2 males under 10 (Oliver & John) and 2 males between 26 & 45, 2 females under 10 (Cynthia and Lucy) and Lydia between 26 & 45 years of age. He cites having come from Cumberland.

In the 1810 "Vinalhaven" census (which includes North Haven), John had 3 males under 10 (Elisha, twins Horatio & Hiram), 2 males between 10 & 16 (John & Oliver), and himself aged +45; 2 females under 10 (Sarah & Abigail), 1 female between 10 & 16 (Lucy), 1 female between 16 & 26 (Cynthia) and Lydia between 26 & 45.

Death Announcement: John, eldest son of Abiel, Esq, of Cumberland, at Vinalhaven, Me, in 56th year. Feb 25, 1817
