John Brown was b 15 Nov 1761, Cumberland, Rhode Island, the s/o Lt Abial Brown & Abigail Bucklin. He d 26 Feb 1817, North Haven.
John married Lydia Carr (twin) on 8 May 1792, Thomaston (intentions). Lydia was b 4 Feb 1774, North Haven (Pulpit Harbor), along with her twin brother Benjamin Carr, Jr. She was the d/o Benjamin Carr & Mary Baxter. She d 19 Aug 1841, North Haven.
John is definitely the son of Abiel Brown and Abigail Bucklin of Cumberland, Rhode Island. His death record cites his father. There is a Capron genealogy (his grandmother) which cites John (and sister Sarah) as being part of the family, and both of their ages fit with that family's genealogy.
There are two earlier houses, one in the orchard north of the present day (1987) house, and a log cabin between the cemetery (Old Brown) and the shore. John's sister, Sarah Brown, also removed to North Haven with him. She never married and is also buried in Old Brown Cemetery.

24 July 1796: John Brown of Vinalhaven, housewright, for $100 pounds from George Brown of Vinalhaven, housewright....Beginning at a stake & stones standing at the mouth of the North Harbour Creek, then northerly to the shore of North Island, thence running 22 degrees 1/2 west 5 chains 50 links to a pine stump near a saw mill, thence running south 56 degrees west through the middle of said saw mill 9 chains 50 links to a maple tree marked on 4 sides, thence south course by land of Levi Smith to a stake & stones, thence turning and running an easterly course at right angles with the last line by the end of Michael Bowen's land 35 rods by a pine tree marked on 4 sides, thence turning right a southerly course to the side of said Bowen's land about 90 rods to a fir tree marked on 4 sides, then running east 56 rods to a stake & stones on the land of James Cooper, then running north by said Cooper's land and land of Charles Stewart, about 300 rods to a birch tree standing near the shore, then as the shore lies to the bounds first mentioned, with all the buildings. April 1800, Vinalhaven Vital Records: Voted that the second [school] District go from Robbins' Point to Penelope Winslow & John Brown in a straight line.

In the 1810 "Vinalhaven" census (which includes North Haven), John had 3 males under 10 (Elisha, twins Horatio & Hiram), 2 males between 10 & 16 (John & Oliver), and himself aged +45; 2 females under 10 (Sarah & Abigail), 1 female between 10 & 16 (Lucy), 1 female between 16 & 26 (Cynthia) and Lydia between 26 & 45.
Death Announcement: John, eldest son of Abiel, Esq, of Cumberland, at Vinalhaven, Me, in 56th year. Feb 25, 1817
Lydia married 2nd Samuel Calderwood on 16 Dec 1821 on North Haven. He was born 10 Dec 1761 and died 6 March 1842, son of John Calderwood & Elizabeth McCurdy.
