James "Smokey" Falls Deal, 79, of South Fourth St. died Dec. 22, 2002 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness.

A native of Cowpens, he was the son of the late Jim Deal and Hazel Davis Deal Cookson. He was a chief petty officer in the U. S. Navy, having served during World War II. He was a member of Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are six sisters, Faye Miller, Betty Tice and Gayle Turner, all of Lockhart, Irene Rash and La Vadar Gaston of Chester and Hazel Fowler of Jonesville; one brother, Harold (Bud) Cookson of Union; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Ben Hill. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

The family is at the home of a sister, Betty Tice, 117 South Sixth St., Lockhart, S.C. 29364.
