Essie Maggie Buchanan Butler, 90, of Valdese, passed away on Friday, January 1, 2016 at Autumn Care Nursing Center, following a period of declining health.

Maggie was born on November 25, 1925 in Mitchell County, to the late Robert Lynn Buchanan and Hattie McClurd Buchanan.

She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and was retired from Dolly Hosiery, where she worked as a knitter for many years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Brodus Butler, one son, Charles Ray Buchanan, six brothers; Millard, Ralph, Tarp, Bruce, Henry and Robert Buchanan and one sister, Edna Gilliland.

Survivors include two sisters, Gail Wise and Lillian Burleson, one brother, Arthur Denver Buchanan, and two grandsons, Scott and Kevin Buchanan. Also surviving are two great-granddaughters, Alexis and Lea Buchanan, a daughter in-law, Rhonda Rhyne and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 4, 2016 at 3:00 P.M. at Heritage Baptist Church in Morganton. Interment will follow at Trinity Baptist Church.
