Sometime between 1943 and 1944, they moved to Scottdale, DeKalb County (near Avondale Estates), Georgia, where Wilbur worked as a laborer at the Scottdale Mill (which closed in 1982). They lived in one of the mill houses at 428 Patterson Ave. Their backyard adjoined a big ball field supported by the mill. Their 4th Child, Nathaniel Ray Pilgrim was born May 1944. The mill was located only a few blocks away so the employees either walked or rode their horses to work. Years later, Wilbur traded his Patterson Ave house for another mill house one street over at 3234 E. Ponce de Leon Ave, which is located across from the railroad.
After the kids were grown, Wilbur and Gladys sold their home and moved to a small house at 4400 Stone Mountain Hwy (Hwy 78), Lilburn, Gwinnett County, GA. A Toyota dealership now occupies that area.
Wilbur and Gladys raised chickens and pigs at their Lilburn home. Their daughter, Alma, and her husband David Caldwell, along with their 4 children lived across the street at 4365 Stone Mountain Hwy. Alma and her family eventually sold their house and moved to Decatur, Ga. This house was later used as a jewelry store and bulldozed in 2018 to make way for more business development.
Wilbur and Gladys also eventually sold their Lilburn home and moved to another small house at 228 Weeks Street, Decatur, Ga, 30030. It was a 2 bedroom 1 bath house and they continued growing vegetables in their backyard. After they sold this home, it was used as a chiropractor's office and then turned back into a residential home. This was Wilbur's last residence before he passed away. Shortly after, Gladys sold the house and moved in with her children. Her last residence was at a nursing home in Bremen, Georgia.
Wilbur and Gladys are buried at Melwood Cemetery at 5170 E. Ponce de Leon Ave, Stone Mountain, Ga 30083.b
Their children:
Alma Faye Caldwell Ghorley (1936-2000), Mary Joyce Wood (1939-1983), Doris Jeanette Partain Kelly (1942-living ), and Nathaniel Ray Pilgrim (1944-2018 )
