Nathaniel III was the 6th child born to Nathaniel Cox, Jr and Joanna (Tenney) Cox. On August 21, 1824 he married Thirza Reynolds. She was Nathaniel's first cousin. They had 5 children: Nathaniel Cox IV, Dorcas Cox, Benjamin L. Cox, Eliza Jane Cox, and Joanna Cox. Note his date of birth is calculated based on his grave stone inscription. Nathaniel III died at the age of 37. Between 1842 and 1850, Thirza married Alexander Morong. The 1850 U.S. Census for Edmunds, Maine lists Alexander Morong (27), Thirza (42), Benjamin L. Cox (15), Eliza Jane Cox (12), Joan or Joanna Cox (9), and Thirza’s mother-in-law Abigail Colson Morong (60). Note that Thirza’s two oldest children, Nathaniel Cox IV and Dorcas Cox, had married in 1842 and 1847, respectively, and thus they were no longer living with their mother Thirza. Mr. Morong died on February 24, 1858. The 1860 U.S. Census lists the following adults and children at the Morong home in Edmunds: Thirza Morong (52), Benjamin L. Cox (25), Louisa [Eliza A. Smith] Cox (21), Hannah M. Cox (1), and Eva A. Cox (1). Eliza Jane Cox (22) married Nathaniel C. Carter in 1853. Joanna Cox (19) passed away before the 1860 Census took place. She is buried in South Edmunds Cemetery near her father Nathaniel III. Note that Louisa was actually Benjamin’s 1st wife, Eliza A. Smith. Benjamin and Eliza had three daughters: Eva A. Cox and twin sister Hannah (born in 1859) and Joanna Cox (born in 1861). It is probable that Hannah did not survive childhood because there is no further historical record for Hannah. The 1870 U.S. Census showed Benjamin L. Cox (34) living in Edmunds with 2nd wife Mary B. Cox (19), Eliza’s two daughters: Eva L. Cox (10) and Joanna Cox (9), and four of Mary’s children: Elzetta Cox (7), Lottie C. Cox (4) [Nathaniel?}, William L. Cox (2), and Eliza C. Cox (1 month). Note that two of Mary’s children, Amanda and Burk Augustus, had not been born at the time of the 1870 U.S. Census. Thirza married 3rd Joseph Segee. She outlived her 3rd husband, just like she outlived her 1st and 2nd husbands. Thirza's death record and burial record have not been found, but it is assumed she was buried in Edmunds or Dennysville.
