Leah, as she liked to be called, was the mother of 12 children, five sons and seven daughters. Two sons, John Washington and Serge (Sidney) Marcel, served in World War I and one son, Clifford Rex served during WWII. Her husband, Michel Merile Chauvin, died in an accident in Mulvay in July 1916. She was left with seven children under the age of 16 to take care of. The family moved from Gueydan to St. Martinville where some of her children had settled after marriage. For the rest of her life, she would call St. Martinville her home.

She loved to cook and passed her cooking skills including how to make gumbo down to her children and their spouses. It is said that after her death, some of her cooking pots were donated to the Longfellow-Evangeline Historic Site where they can be seen in the kitchen area.

She shares her tomb with her son, Clifford Rex Chauvin, her grandson, Howard Martin and his wife, Mary.

The name plate at the top of her tomb is in reference to the fact that she was Merrill Chauvin's wife. Merrill is buried at Gueydan Cemetery, Gueydan, Louisiana.
