BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: (Written by Jack Fryar in 1975)

Enoch Bohannon was born 1831, in White County, Tennessee. He died 29 August 1912, in the state hospital for the insane at Nevada, Missouri, and is buried in an unmarked grave in the Lebanon Cemetery, Lebanon, Missouri. Although he was born in Tennessee and lived briefly as a child in Illinois, Enoch Bohannon spent most of his life in Laclede County, near Orla, Missouri.
Enoch Bohannon was the third of eight known children born to William Bohannon and Margaret O'Dell. His sisters included Catherine, who married Ashford Hough, and Margaret, who never married. His brothers were Lewis, Elijah, William, Jr., James D., and Nelson Monroe.
On 13 August 1864, Enoch Bohannon enlisted as a private in the 46th Missouri Infantry and was assigned to Company B. The descriptive roll indicates his place of birth as White County, Tennessee, his present age as 33, and his occupation as a farmer. He is shown to have had gray eyes, black hair, "light" complexion, and was 5 feet and 11 inches tall. He was discharged on 7 March 1865, at Springfield, Missouri.
On 7 July 1883, Enoch Bohannon made an application for a military pension. The application declares that on or about the 15 September 1864, "he incurred loss of right eye caused by exposure while laying out of nights, in that extreme exposure & cold produced Neuralgia in the head thereby causing the loss of said eye." The application for a disability pension also gives the maiden name of his wife and the full dates of all of his children.
Enoch Bohannon married first on 19 October 1851, in Laclede County, Missouri, to Julia Ann Shirley. Her tombstone inscription located in the Lebanon, Missouri Cemetery shows that she was born 14 August 1831 and died 23 May 1903. She was the daughter of Frank Shirley and Mary Ann Broyles.
Julia Ann Shirley appears with her sister Salina (or Delila) Shirley on the 1850 Laclede County, Missouri, census living with their grandparents, Thomas Broyles and Susanna Yeager. It is assumed that their parents died in East Tennesee (White County, perhaps) before the Broyles Family moved to Laclede County. Julia Ann Shirley indicates on most all census records that she was born in Indiana, whereas her sister Delila state that she was born in Tennessee.
Enoch Bohannon married second on 20 November 1905, in Laclede County, Missouri, to Luzan Farrar, born in 1832, place unknown; died 9 February 1914, buried Lebanon Cemetery, Lebanon, Missouri. Marriage records in Laclade County, Missouri, indicate that he was 74 years old and that she was 73 years old when they married.
Enoch and Julia Ann Bohannon became the parents of eight known children.
