Juan Francisco Dana y Carrillo was born at Santa Bárbara, Alta California, México, where he was baptized in the Presidio Chapel June 22, 1838 (BP Baptism 01270). John became a U.S. citizen with the transfer of California's sovereignty in 1848. He married his cousin, Francisca Carolina Thompson y Carrillo, in the parlor of the De la Guerra home, Santa Bárbara, December 25, 1860. Many events of his lifetime are preserved in the stories he told his grandson that were later published as 'The Blond Ranchero' (Dawson's Bookshop, Los Angeles, 1960; reprinted by South County Historical Society, Arroyo Grande, 1999). John was buried in the Dana Family plot, but his unmarked gravesite was not recorded.
