In memory of Private Jeremiah Desmond in Co. H 54th Regiment of Kentucky Mounted Infantry Volunteers (USA)who accidentally fell overboard off the steamship "Magnolia" at Covington, the evening of August 19, 1865, and drowned in the Ohio River. The company was patroling the river. Pvt. Desmond had enlisted for a year on September 1, 1864. He was on the way to being discharged when this terrible tragedy happened. Captain D. E. Roberts, Jr. wrote that he was a good soldier faithful and attentive to his duties.
He was survived by his wife of over fifteen years Mary McAuliffe Desmond, son Timothy Joseph Desmond, and stepsons Edward and Owen Myers. He was preceded in death by daughters Catherine, Margaret, Johanna,and Mary; father Timothy Desmond who emigrated with grown children from Ireland and died in 1852 in Maysville.
