Chilton, WI

Stella H. Gerner, 86, of Chilton, passed away Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Willowdale Nursing Home in New Holstein. She was the former Stella H. Propson, born September 6, 1929. She was the daughter of the late Joseph R. and Appolonia (Joas) Propson. Her husband, Sylvester, preceded her in death on February 23, 1996. First and foremost Stella was a homemaker, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She graduated from Chilton High School in 1946 being the youngest in her class. Prior to her marriage she worked as a bookkeeper for the John Deere Dealer in Chilton. She married Sylvester Gerner on May 10, 1950 at Saint Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Kloten. In the early 1950’s Stella and Sylvester operated the Fisherman’s Inn in Brothertown. She also worked at the Heritage Orchard, and at G & R Service in Stockbridge. For over 30 years she owned and operated G. Distributing Company, where a portion of the sales went to training seeing eye dogs for the blind through Master Eye Foundation of America. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Jericho, where she served as treasurer for four years and later served on their finance committee. She is presently a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Chilton.

Stella enjoyed playing skat, Sheepshead, deer hunting, fishing, sturgeon spearing, and doing word searches. She cherished spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed eating at Seven Angels restaurant and visiting with friends there. She always enjoyed listening to the Jerry Schneider radio program, watching Lawrence Welk, the Green Bay Packers, and Wheel of Fortune. Some of her most treasured sights were the sunsets over Lake Winnebago. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include her three children, Shirley Knapp of Douglasville, GA, Sandra (John) Kartheiser of Forsyth, MO, and Scott Gerner of Chilton; five grandchildren, Todd (Corina) Wagner of IL, Kelley (Jared) Likes of GA, Shane (Lindsey) Gerner of Chilton, Lance Gerner of Chilton, John W. Kartheiser (Alexandra Neinast) of TX. She is further survived by 10 great-grandchildren, Taisha, Xanthos, Zerin, Mali, and Daxton Likes, Rianne and Alexandra Wagner, Alayna, Kailyn, and Layla Gerner. She is also survived by a brother, Gordon (June) Propson of New Holstein; sisters-in-law, Rosie Propson of Chilton, Rosie (Don) Gerner of MN, Dorothy Gerner of WI, Connie Gerner of MD, and Bev Gerner of WI; her Godchildren, Jeff Propson, Frank Perl, and Kenneth Propson; special friend, Bernard Kursheidt, and many other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, Sylvester, Stella was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Arthur Knapp; two brothers, Clarence (Margaret) Propson and Norbert Propson; two sisters, Esther (Harold) Heiner and Marie (Elmer) Perl; and her in-laws, Emil (Louisa) Gerner, Corbin (Bernie) Gerner, Lester Gerner, Emmett (Janice) Gerner, Robert Gerner, Lou (Al) Harlow, Betty (Ray) Barta, and Elroy (Arlene) Gerner.

Funeral services will be at 11:30am on Thursday, September 17, 2015 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church (54 E. Main Street) in Chilton. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Jericho. Friends may call at Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main Street) in Chilton from 4:00pm to 7:00pm on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 and Thursday, September 17, 2015 from 10:00am to 11:00am. There will be a 6:00pm parish vigil service Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Stella’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the caregivers and staff at Willowdale Nursing Home and Century Ridge for the care and compassion shown to her.
