Casualty of the Great War, Alfred was Master-Mercantile Marine, on S.S. "Enosis".He died,aged 54, going down with his ship-the only fatality of the incident.Enosis was on a voyage from Barry to Malta with a cargo of coal when sunk by the German submarine U-33 (Konrad Gansser) 150 miles ESE of Malta.
He was the son of Lieutenant Bowling, R.N.and the husband of Florence Bowling of "Magellan," Birchington, Kent.

His son,Second Lieutenant Victor MacDonald Bowling was killed, aged 18 whilst serving with the Royal Flying Corps;12th Sqdn.on 4th March 1917.

Father and son are commemorated on the Birchington War Memorial.
