WILLIAM H. HAMILTON was born in Union Township, this county, September 8, 1834, and is the son of Micajah and Elizabeth (Luyster) Hamilton.
     The father was born in Culpeper County, Va., in 1797, and died in this county in 1878. He was the son of a native of Virginia [Theophilus Hambleton], who was an early settler of Kentucky, where Micajah Hamilton was reared.
     The mother of our subject was born in Mercer County, Ky., in 1797, and died in this county in 1884. The marriage of Micajah Hamilton and Elizabeth Luyster was consummated in Kentucky, and unto them were born the following children: Peter L., John, Rachel, Mary, Susan and Nancy, and then the parents and children came to this state and county in 1834, and located in Union township,where the deaths of the parents occurred. To them, after their arrival, were born these children: William H., Martha, Robert P. and James T., and two others who died in infancy. Of these children, eight are living, four in Johnson County, two in Missouri, one in Kansas [James Wiley Young] and one in Iowa.
     The subject of this sketch was reared on a farm, and received an education in the country schools. He has followed farming for an occupation. In 1856 he was married to Charlotte J. Terrell, daughter of Henry H. and Nancy (Foster) Terrell, natives of Kentucky, coming to this state about 1854. Mrs. Hamilton was born in Nelson County, Ky., March 2, 1840. The following are the children born unto the above marriage: Nancy E., Peter S., Addie J., Mary E., Martha E., Emma S., and Blanche C.
     Not long after the marriage of Mr. Hamilton went to Kansas, where he lived for a period of four years, and then returned to his native state and county, where he has since made his home.
     Soon after his return to Indiana, the Civil War broke out, and in 1862, August 20, he enlisted in Company E, Seventh Indiana Infantry, as private, and among the important engagements in which he participated, were Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam and Union. June 30, 1865, he was mustered out of the service, at Point Lookout, Md.
     At the close of the war he returned to his home, and since has been actively engaged in farming. Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton are members of the Presbyterian Church at Shiloh.

     William Henry Hamilton was married to Charlotte Jane Terrill Sept. 4, 1856 in Union township, Johnson Co., Indiana. After residing here one year they moved to Allen Co., KS. Purchased 16 acres of land follows farming [for] 4 yrs after which removed to Hensley Twp, IN purchased 80 acres of land on which he lived and farmed 9 yrs. from Nov 1st 1861 to Oct 1st 1876. Then removed to Union Twp. purchased 340 acres where he has since lived farming and trading."

Hamilton Family Reunion.

     Last Sunday, September 4th, a very pleasant reunion of the family of Wm. H. and C. J. Hamilton occurred at their home in Union township near Beech Grove church. It was the forty-second anniversary of their wedding and all of their descendants that are living were present except Miss Jessie Byers, their grand-daughter. They have seven children, six daughters and one son, all of whom are married and living in this county. The oldest is forty-one years and the youngest twenty-seven. Of grandchildren they have twenty living and seven dead; the oldest twenty-one past and the youngest six months old. They have one great-grandchild two years old last March. Mr. Hamilton was sixty-four years old Wednesday, September 7. Mrs. Hamilton was fifty-eight March 2, 1898.
     Others present were Isaac Vandiver and wife of Franklin, Mrs. Mildred Adel of Illinois sisters of Mrs. Hamilton; Geo. Price and Rev. Geo. Ragsdale of Beech Grove. Most of those present were at church that morning and then repaired to the home where a sumptuous dinner was spread. Rev. Ragsdale invoked the divine blessing after which all helped themselves. Bro. Ragsdale being especially fond of fried chicken and Sherman Hamilton. Oh well, he likes iced tea. The afternoon was spent in a pleasant social manner until late when all departed wishing Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton many more years of happiness.

On last Sabbath at 1:30 Rev. Woodson preached the funeral discourse of Mr. W. H. Hamilton at first Mt. Pleasant church. A quartet from Hopewell sang. Mr. Hamilton had been in bad health for a long time suffering from a complication of troubles, rheumatic principally. He was an uncle of Scott Hamilton.
