John Cothern (C.S.A. Veteran) was the son of Elijah Cothern (C.S.A. Veteran) & Catherine (Dunaway) Cothern of old Pike County, Mississippi. John Cothern married Arminda Dunaway ca. 1854 in Pike County, Mississippi. Arminda Dunaway is said to be the daughter of Joseph D. Dunaway (b. ca. 1778) & Catherine (McCullough) Dunaway (b. ca. 1782-1788) but since Cathernine Dunaway is about 50 years older than Arminda I suggest the possibility that these may have been her grandparents that she lived with.

"One of the first grist mills run by water power built in Pike County was constructed across Carter's Creek on the plantation owned by John Cothern, which was settled by John Carter one of the earliest settlers, from whom this creek took its name." (from 'Pike County, Mississippi 1798-1876' by Luke Ward Conerly)

John Cothern is listed on the Confederate rolls of the "Dahlgreen Rifles" along with his father, Ensign Elijah Cothern, & his brother, Joseph. John Cothern served in Company H of the 7th Mississippi Infantry.

John Cothern was a farmer and a Baptist by faith. He had at least eleven children by his 1st wife: 1. Amanda, 2. Baby Boy Cothern (8 July 1857), 3. Catherine, 4. Mindana, 5. Joseph (CSA), 6. Ann U., 7. L. Allie, 8. Fielding, 9. Sallie A., 10. Judy Ann, & 11. Elizabeth Arminda.

After the death of his 1st wife's John Cothern was married a 2nd time to Clarinda O'Quinn, the daughter of John D. O'Quinn & Louisa (Tullis) O'Quinn. Therre were four children of this union: 1. Name ?, 2. Lucious, 3. Mary Louise, & 4. William Esco.

After the death of his 2nd wife John Cothern married a 3rd time to Martha Ann (Walker) Duncan, the widow of James Pinkney Duncan. There were no children of this union. Martha Ann (Walker) Cothern survived John Cothern and she is buried by her first husband, James Pinkney Duncan in the Isaac Duncan Cemetery.
