Born 'Mindana Cothern' she was the daughter of John Cothern (C.S.A. Veteran) & his 1st wife, Arminda {called "Minda"} Dunaway, of old Pike County, Mississippi. Mindana Cothern was from Carter's Creek and her parents & grandparents are buried in the Enon Cemetery in that part of eastern Pike which later became Walthall County.

"Osne of the first grist mills run by water power built in Pike County was constructed across Carter's Creek on the plantation owned by John Cothern, which was settled by John Carter one of the earliest settlers, from whom this creek took its name." (from 'Pike County, Mississippi 1798-1876' by Luke Ward Conerly) Mindana Cothern was known as "Danie." She married John Thomas Holmes on the 20th of December 1882 in old Pike County, Mississippi. There were at least eight children born of this union, of which 6 lived to maturity, 3 sons & 3 daughters: 1. Eula Armenda Holmes, 2. Joseph Victor Holmes, 3. J.W. Holmes (born & died in 1890), 4. Ninnie Beulah Holmes, 5. Lottie Elizabeth Holmes, 6. John Hershchel Holmes, 7. Unnamed Infant Holmes, (b. & d. 1900), 8. Herbert Lee Holmes.

Her obituary was published in "The Tylertown Times" on Thursday, December 22, 1932 under the heading, "Mrs. J.T. Holmes Victim of 'Flu'."
